How far would you go to get what you wanted?
Follow the tumultuous and unpredictable path Michael and Kiersten navigate as they painstakingly pursue their options to bring a child into their life, including bewildering science, DNA muddling, and the bureaucratic complexities of international adoption.
Swimming in Circles provides an all-access pass into the private life of a couple faced with situations ranging from the embarrassing to the absurd, and decisions that are impossible one moment and incomprehensible the next. This truly unique memoir is told from the usually neglected male perspective and is filled with gallows humor peppered in between the depths of disappointment and the peaks of possibility.
Author Michael Barr presents every uncomfortable and emotional detail with stark honesty, chronicling his run-ins with an overenthusiastic mother-in-law, a clinically depressed couch, his own personal demons, and even Martha Stewart. His sharp, candid perspective creates a tale that readers are sure to find both hysterical and heartrending.

I have been in this arena now since 1996 and all I can say "It's about time that we have a book like this for those who are struggling each and every day with infertility!" I wept through this book, I laughed through this book. I found myself saying out loud "Yes! I have been there, I get it!" The peaks and valleys in this book are just so down to earth -- and it's so genuine and brutally honest. What I loved most was this was from a man's perspective and we don't often see this as infertility has for years been regarded as a woman's struggle, when clearly we as women aren't the only ones affected.Michael Barr has a delightful way with words -- and I didn't feel like I was reading just another book about infertility. In talking to other colleagues who too have read his book we have all felt like this was indeed a love story of sorts. He loves his wife so very much, and how much he's going to love his children. The vulnerability Michael shares with us is utterly amazing and at times heart wrenching. I think the part of the book that spoke to me and made me cry was his talk he had with God and how he begged to be given a baby. I can't tell you how many times over the past 16 years my husband and I were trying so very hard to have a baby that I was on my knees literally begging God for a child.
Men often suffer silently regarding infertility and to see someone be so open and honest about the struggles through infertility is bound to give the reader hope. I think this books is for anyone who is on the trek through the jungle of infertility or who has struggled with infertility. I can't wait for his next book, I think there's a lot of insight with this book, and I think that men and women, young and old, are going to love this book.

Swimming In Circles A Baby Chase Odyssey eBook Michael Barr Yael Abel Reviews
WOW .. this book is riviting. Once I started reading it, I couldn't wait to get back to it. This read gave me new insights and understanding of the journey childless couples go through. this story changed me, it should be offered to every couple starting invitro.... thank-you Michael Barr
As someone who is currently trying to get pregnant, this book completely spoke to me. I laughed out loud, it made me relate a bit more to what my husband may be feeling, and at numerous times, it tugged at my heartstrings. Michael is a brilliant writer, and quite obviously, a loving and supportive husband. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying (or has tried) to conceive with or without luck. It's very inspirational and gives hope just when you may need it!
First things first this book is a first-person narrative from a man facing male infertility. The overwhelming majority of books about infertility are written from the female perspective, or about female infertility, or both. Those few books that do address male infertility are mostly informational, medical-textbook-like ventures that discuss the physical issues and treatments, but they're coldly impersonal. Very little has been written about how it feels for men to face this struggle, and even less of that has actually been written from the perspective of a man who has himself been through it.
Into that yawning void steps Michael Barr with "Swimming in Circles." This is not an informational book; it is a personal one. And it is an excellent one. Barr's writing is compelling as he tells the story of the rollercoaster that he and his wife Kiersten faced in their quest to start a family of their own. You'll laugh out loud as his sarcastic wit shines through on the page, but you'll ache along with them when hope-filled highs are followed by devastating lows. Throw in a healthy sprinkling of truth-stranger-than-fiction twists, and the end result is a brilliantly told tale that's well worth reading even if you never face infertility at all.
For men (like me) who are faced with the diagnosis of male infertility, this book is an invaluable resource. Stereotypically, men don't talk about their emotions, and they certainly don't talk about infertility, but the result is that the millions of men out there fighting this battle are left feeling very, very alone. Barr's story shows those men that they are not alone after all, and there is hope to be found in fighting what can often seem like a hopeless, endless war. For those men, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. For the women who love those men, I recommend it just as highly, as it should help you understand what your men are thinking and feeling.
Major props to Michael for being willing to share such a deeply personal struggle for himself and his wife. Five stars all the way.
As someone who works in the field of childbirth, this book is what has been missing for those who struggle with infertility! This is a book that shares the torment that comes with infertility from the man's perspective. It is, at times, painfully and brutally honest, while at other times hysterically funny. Michael Barr has a way with words and has beautifully described his journey into the world of infertility. Along the way he will make you laugh as he works to find humor in an otherwise difficult situation.
But this is more than just a book about infertility. It is a love story. A story about a man's love for his wife and his future children. From the detailed description of the day he met his wife, to the heartbreaking talk with God begging to be given the gift of a long-desired, and hard worked for baby, Mr. Barr takes you into his life and his heart and his soul. It is refreshing to see a book so open and honest about a topic that many men suffer with silently.
This book is for anyone who has struggled with infertility. It is a book for anyone who knows anyone who has struggled with infertility. It is a book for anyone who has a family of their own. It is a book for anyone who has a heart. Everyone has something to gain from Mr. Barr's story. I hope to see more work from him in the future.
