They called him the Demon Earl. They said he could do anything. Son of a rogue and a gypsy, Nicolas Davies was a notorious rake until a shattering betrayal left him alone and embittered in the Welsh countryside. Desperation drives quiet schoolmistress Clare Morgan to ask the Demon Earl to help save her village. Unwilling to involve himself in the problems of others, Nicholas sets an impossible price on his aid - only if Clare will live with him for three months, letting the world think the worst, will he intervene. Furiously, Clare accepts his outrageous challenge, and finds herself drawn into a glittering Regency world of danger and desire.

As allies, she and Nicholas fight to save her community. As adversaries, they explore the hazardous terrain of power and sensuality. And as lovers, they surrender to a passion that threatens the foundations of their lives.

Thunder and Roses was nominated for a RITA award and was a finalist for the RWA Golden Choice award for best audiobook of the year.

Thunder and Roses Fallen Angels Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Jo Putney Peter Bishop Inc Mary Jo Putney Books

Mary Jo Putney has written a tangled and twisty romance set in Wales that has some pretty remarkable takes on the period and coal mining, gypsies and religion . After reading the first chapter I was ready to put this book on the back burner since it appeared to be just another historical romance and I am so happy I kept on reading a bit longer as it developed into a great read. Some parts were pretty typical as expected of this genre and you will be pleased if this is on your favorite type of reading. Give this book just a few chapters and you will most likely end up gobbling it up in only one Sunday.

At last, a Regency romance that neither strains credulity nor insults the reader's intelligence. Although the dialogue was not what you would find in Jane Austen's work, it was free of 21st century expressions and was realistic. The book began with what I originally considered a ridiculous premise, but as the story progressed, the richly drawn characters drew me in and made the plot seem more plausible. After all, it is romantic fiction. The writing flowed well and the HEA grew out of the action in a natural way. I hope to read the rest of this series, and I highly recommend this book.
Nickolas, Lord Aberdare's, life struggles were deeply tragic and troubling. His personal growth was moving and meaningful. Clare's story was self inflicted problems caused by good intent and, possibly, a little something more. I had a major problem with the basic premise which brought the couple together. The real problem was that although both knew their relationship was wrong, they continued with no compelling to do so. The premise was forced to the point of reader discomfort and disbelief. However, this story had many, many moving and dramatic moments that were wonderful. The historical setting was very well done with details I would not have known without this book-particularly concerning mining coal and slate. The characters were deeply drawn from the H/h to the lesser ones. This book sets up the series which is a really good set of exciting, interesting novels alone and fabulous together. So read, enjoy, and don't get hung up on the bumps.
Such an intelligent historical romance that I am impressed enough to rate it 5 stars. Excellent historical information, lots of humor, several subplots along with the main plot to keep me entertained and a balanced, inevitable HEA. An unlikely pairing of an Earl and a minister’s daughter is well and charmingly developed.
I also enjoyed this tale. Two bright people with each their painful past, gradually get to know each other and find love.
Others have mentioned Nicolas and Clare's background, our two protagonists, and the very dangerous conditions in Welsh mines.
Even today, we read of lives lost in modern mines. I am old enough to remember lives being lost when masses taken out of a mine began to slide down, becoming a landslide, and killed mining families in Wales.
So it was not a minor thing Clare wanted to set right.
I even laughed out loud while reading the author's notes explaining some historical facts. That should give you a hint of the talent shown in the actual historic romance story. Nicolas, the Gypsy earl, and Clare, the highly intelligent school mistress, were great subjects of such a unique and entertaining tale of love and betrayal, generosity and greed, and other important topics all set in a Welsh mining village with cold wet weather and warm hearts and music.
I enjoyed this book very much!! Ms. Putney did a fine job of story development and describing the characters!! There were also some funny moments which added to it. The character, Nicholas was torn between the worlds of gypsies and aristocracy. The female character was the daughter of a Methodist Minister who needed his help to make improvements to the mine and the town. When she came to Nicholas for help he put forth an interesting challenge. Kudos to Mary Jo Putney!!
I liked this love story. I appreciate the historical accuracy. Thank you for that. I understood Clare accepting the challenge so the lot of the village would be improved. I did have to chuckle about the reviewers who were upset about the sex in the book. Here is a clue...the cover with folks well on the way to bring naked. I look forward to Fallen Angel #2.
